First published in 1844, the classical fairy-tale “The Snow Queen” by Hans Christian Andersen, has been an inspiration for various authors throughout the years. It has many different interpretations depending of the context and time of development.

The unconventional approach to narration in the original by Hans Christian Andersen that explores the lyrical aspect of a fairy-tale rather than the didactic was the basis for the development of the play by author Biljana Krajchevska. Her idea for the revision of the fable, was to create a story about friendship that never ends, a friendship that cannot be corrupted by all of the dangers of modern society and the lack of values imposed by consumerism.

The directress Dragana Miloshevska- Popov’s approach was to create a story on stage as it was written by a child. The main character Gerda is willing to go through all the lengths to find her friend Kay trapped in the ice-cold heart of the Snow Queen. This is a story of self sacrifice, friendship and unconditional love opposed to the cunning calculated evil forces driven by loneliness, and inability to connect with someone without making them a captive.
